Assignment
In UV spectrometry, purging the instrument with an inert gas is essential to eliminate oxygen and moisture, which can absorb UV light and interfere with measurements. However, optimizing the purging process requires a more systematic approach to ensure the chamber is fully purged with minimal gas usage. Computational modelling provides a cost-effective and efficient way to predict the effects of different purging parameters on the system, making it possible to fine-tune the process without conducting numerous physical experiments.

Modelling and simulation of the purging process can help identify optimal purging conditions and better understand the relationship between various factors such as flow rate, chamber geometry, and gas mixing behavior. This allows for a more efficient and targeted approach to optimizing spectrometer performance in UV analysis.

Objective
The primary goal of this internship is to develop a computational model that optimizes the purging process in spectrometers, particularly for UV measurements. This involves:

  • Developing a model to simulate gas flow dynamics and interactions with spectrometer components
  • Analyzing the influence of parameters such as gas flow rate, purging time, and chamber geometry
  • Optimizing purging conditions to improve spectrometer performance with minimal gas usage

Scope of the Assignment
During this internship, you will:

  • Conduct a literature review on existing computational models for gas flow and purging systems
  • Develop a computational model (e.g., using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) or another suitable technique)
  • Simulate and analyze different purging conditions to determine optimal settings
  • Validate the model using experimental data and fine-tune its predictive accuracy
  • Provide recommendations for improving purging efficiency in UV spectrometry
