Meeting the Needs of Our Community
Community Food Share is a non-profit organization that collects food to share with the Boulder and Broomfield counties of Colorado. Started in 1981 to meet the food resource needs of the people of Boulder and Broomfield counties. The organization now provides approximately 22,500 meals a day through agencies supported by Food Share and to private individuals. As of today, 90% of the food the organization distributes is donated, whereas 5% is purchased and another USDA commodities make up another 5%. This food is processed and inspected for quality and is distributed through a network of more than 40 local non-profit organizations or directly to families, seniors, and other individuals in need through onsite and mobile pantries.
Avantes Lends a Helping Hand
On December 11th, the Avantes, Inc. team based in Louisville, CO volunteered to help Community Food Share with a half day of service. After a brief summary of how the organization runs, we were escorted to the warehouse for further instructions. The team spent several hours sorting food by categories such as drinks, cereals, snacks, and canned vegetables. We were taught how to spot food donations that did not meet quality and safety standards. This included checking canned items to see if there were any flaws that would allow air in and cause spoilage or contamination. After donations were sorted, the boxes of sorted goods would be stored for later distribution to partner organizations or to the retail market run by the organization for private individuals seeking food assistance.
Continuing to Give Back
The Avantes, Inc. team sorted food to provide over 600 meals to organizations and homes across Boulder and Broomfield counties. Because the organization does not have staff to fulfill all of the day-to-day sorting and distributing the organization needs so volunteer efforts are crucial. Avantes will likely return to this organization in the future to give back to the community that supports us.
