Avantes Inc. was granted funding from the State of Colorado Innovative Industry Internship Program for a student pursuing a degree in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) field.  This is the second year in a row that Avantes participated in this program.

Meet the Intern

Avantes was lucky enough to find Valerie Lesser as our summer intern for 2018.  Valerie is a senior at CU Boulder pursuing dual degrees in Aerospace Engineering and Computer Science. Her previous experience includes an internship with the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) High Altitude Observatory (HAO) working on the design of control systems for the high-altitude scientific balloon system, SUNRISE gondola.

Our 2018 Success Story

Avantes is committed to demonstrating the capability of our instruments for original equipment manufacturers.  Valerie was instrumental this summer developing some prototype configurations of our spectrometers for specific applications such as LIBS, reflectometry and radiometry.  Valerie also put her computer code skills to work refining some Raspberry Pi code for a field portable configuration.  We were incredibly impressed with her dedication to the projects and her understanding of software development and engineering design.

Summer’s End

Valerie was a valued member of our team for the last few months and participated in every facet of Avantes Life, and we extend her our sincerest thanks and wish her amazing success in the future. The Avantes summer internship program has ended for 2018, we are already looking forward to next year!
