How Convsun and Avantes set a new benchmark in AR coating measurement
Accurate optical measurement is essential for manufacturers of anti-reflective (AR) coatings on (solar) glass. When performance differences of less than 0.1% determine product quality, efficiency, and market competitiveness, conventional laboratory measurements are no longer sufficient.
In this case study, Convsun, a leading global producer of AR coatings, explains how it collaborated with Avantes and Eule27 AG to develop an integrated optical measurement system capable of delivering precise and reproducible transmission and reflection data under real industrial conditions.
Measuring AR-coated solar glass: the challenge
Solar glass typically features textured surfaces that scatter light in multiple directions. This makes accurate transmission and reflection measurements difficult using standard spectrometers, which are usually designed for small, flat samples measured in laboratory environments.
For AR coating manufacturers, this measurement uncertainty can mask real performance differences. Even when coatings outperform competitors, the lack of reliable, production-scale optical data makes it difficult to validate and demonstrate this advantage with confidence.
An integrated measurement approach
To address this challenge, Convsun and Eule27 AG developed an advanced integrating-sphere-based measurement system that simultaneously measures transmission and reflection while correcting for systematic measurement errors.
Avantes spectrometers play a central role in the system, providing stable, high-resolution spectral data across the full solar wavelength range. Combined with advanced optical modeling software, the solution enables accurate determination of coating thickness, refractive index, and overall optical performance, even for large industrial glass panels.
Key benefits for industrial AR coating production
The integrated measurement system allows Convsun to reliably quantify optical performance differences below 0.1% and translate measurement accuracy into practical production benefits, including:
- Reliable validation of AR coating performance
- Improved process control and faster optimization
- Reproducible quality verification under real production conditions
- Increased confidence for customers in solar, automotive, and architectural glass markets
