Without our distributing partners, Avantes wouldn’t be the same. That’s why we like to put them in the spotlight by introducing them through a short interview. This month in the spotlights; NewSpec, located in Australia. We spoke with Neil McMahon and Chris Gombaud.
NewSpec is an Australian company, specialized in supplying research and industrial equipment in the field of spectroscopy, lasers, optics, electron microscopes, and surface metrology. “We were established in December 2004 as the exclusive Australian distributor for some of the most renowned photonics suppliers”, Neil explains. “Not only do we supply this equipment, but we also do the marketing, sales, importation, installation, and service of these products”, he adds.
About Neil and Chris
Neil is one of NewSpec’s founders. “When I first started in this industry, mobile phones and the internet did not exist, and now we can not work without them”, Neil says. Neil has 30 years of experience in selling spectroscopic and optical equipment to research and industry clients.
Chris joined the NewSpec team in 2018 as OEM Sales Manager. “I was born in France and worked several years as an international rep manager for a major OEM spectrometer manufacturer before joining NewSpec”, Chris explains. After visiting Australia he never left and is very happy with his role with NewSpec.

Avantes and NewSpec started their partnership in 2013. “Avantes spectrometers were a perfect complementary productline for us”, says Chris. “Avantes offers affordable and compact spectrometers for the research market, and by offering OEM spectrometers to complete our OEM photonics productline they allow us to target more customers and applications”, he adds.
When we ask Neil and Chris what they like best about our partnership they say:
Chris: “Avantes always provide such a responsive support and never hesitate to spend time and efforts to help developing new business opportunities. It is well appreciated and confortable for our sales team to be able to count on a supplier this way.”
Neil: “I am always impressed by Avantes incredible customer service attitude. As in life sometime things go awry but if this happens, Avantes always does everything possible to fix it ASAP, and take actions to ensure it does not happen again. I wish all companies could be like that!”
