The reflection measurement setup is used to measure reflection from the sample. Reflection or reflectance spectroscopy is often used non-invasively and non-destructively to characterize objects and materials. Comparing the reflected light to the light used for illumination can tell you a lot about the characteristics and nature of the object or material being researched, for instance, exact colors, compounds, and more.
Starting steps

When light hits a surface of a material it will either be reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through the material (or a combination of the above). The reflectance of light will depend on the structure and the material properties of the object. Depending on the reflectance application, a wide variety of light sources, accessories, fiber-optic probes and spectrometers can be used. A default reflection measurement setup from Avantes:
• Spectrometer
• Reflection probe or reflection sphere
• Light source

As can be seen in the picture of the reflection setup, the reflection probe is placed close to the
sample. The optimal distance between sample and probe is approximately 4-5 mm. When a wider
distance between the sample and probe is preferred a collimating lens can be used. To accurately focus a small spot from a higher distance, the FCR-COL collimating lens can be mounted to the reflection probe. Adding a collimating lens to the reflection probe can result in some focusing problems.
When a reflection probe is used in combination with a collimating lens (FCR-COL) the light from the
illumination fibers will be projected outside the probe and not at the required position for the read
fiber.
