Assignment
End-of-life tyres (ELTs) represent a significant environmental challenge but also a valuable resource for material recovery. Efficient recycling requires:

  • Reliable identification of elemental composition
  • Detection of additives (Zn, Si, S, Ca, Mg, Al, etc.)
  • Monitoring of fillers (silica, carbon black)
  • Quality control of recycled rubber fractions

Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) offers:

  • Rapid multi-element detection
  • Minimal sample preparation
  • Potential for inline industrial monitoring
  • Capability to analyze solid, heterogeneous materials

However, tyre materials are complex composites consisting of:

  • Natural and synthetic rubber
  • Carbon black
  • Silica fillers
  • ZnO and sulfur curing systems
  • Metallic reinforcements
  • Various inorganic additives

To implement LIBS in recycling processes, a quantitative correlation must be established between:

  • Well-defined model compounds
  • Real heterogeneous tyre samples

Objective
To develop and validate a LIBS-based analytical method capable of:

  1. Identifying key elements in tyre materials
  2. Establishing calibration curves using model compounds
  3. Correlating LIBS signals between model systems and real tyre samples
  4. Assessing feasibility for recycling process monitoring
