March Spectra of the Month: Attenuated Total Reflection

March Spectra of the Month: Attenuated Total Reflection

||| |||

Our Spectra of the month is based on experiments conducted by Avantes Inc engineers. In March, the Avantes team had the opportunity to test a special probe for attenuated total reflection such as might be needed for spectra measurements of highly optically dense materials.

Equipment:

  • Spectrometer:AVASPEC-HSC1024x58TEC-EVO; RS-100; HSC0300-0.42 Grating; OSC-HSC300-1 Order Sorting Coating
  •  ATR-Probe: ATR-S-UV-3B-3F700-PE8
  •  Light Source: AvaLight-DHc

Samples:

  • Methyl Blue Food Dye
  • Methyl Orange Food Dye
  • Used Motor Oil
  • Pure Dimethylformamide
  • Ink Sample A Dissolved in Dimethylformamide
  • Ink Sample B Dissolved in Dimethylformamide

Measurement Method: % Reflectance

  • Reference Off Air
  • Referenced Off Dimethylformamide

Methodology:

  • Clean probe tip
  • Insert probe tip into reference (air or Dimethylformamide)
  • Adjust integration time, smoothing, averaging, and wavelength range.
  • Shutter light source off, take dark
  • Shutter light source on, take reference
  • Move into reflectance mode
  • Insert probe tip into sample
  • Record reflectance values
